Methanol Adsorption and Reaction on Samaria Thin Films on Pt(111)

چکیده
We investigated the adsorption and reaction of methanol on continuous and discontinuous films of samarium oxide (SmOx) grown on Pt(111) in ultrahigh vacuum. The methanol decomposition was studied by temperature programmed desorption (TPD) and infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy (IRRAS), while structural changes of the oxide surface were monitored by low-energy electron diffraction (LEED). Methanol dehydrogenates to adsorbed methoxy species on both the continuous and discontinuous SmOx films, eventually leading to the desorption of CO and H₂ which desorbs at temperatures in the range 400-600 K. Small quantities of CO₂ are also detected mainly on as-prepared Sm₂O₃ thin films, but the production of CO₂ is limited during repeated TPD runs. The discontinuous film exhibits the highest reactivity compared to the continuous film and the Pt(111) substrate. The reactivity of methanol on reduced and reoxidized films was also investigated, revealing how SmOx structures influence the chemical behavior. Over repeated TPD experiments, a SmOx structural/chemical equilibrium condition is found which can be approached either from oxidized or reduced films. We also observed hydrogen absence in TPD which indicates that hydrogen is stored either in SmOx films or as OH groups on the SmOx surfaces.

Morphology and CO adsorption on platinum supported on thin Fe(3)O(4)(111) films.
Nucleation, growth and thermal stability of Pt particles supported on well ordered Fe(3)O(4)(111) thin films grown on Pt(111) were studied by scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) and temperature programmed desorption (TPD) of CO. STM studies showed that Pt grows through the formation of single-layer islands that coalesce at high coverage. Vacuum annealing at 600 K caused Pt sintering and the fo...
متن کاملEnhanced methanol sensing performance of oblique deposited WO3 thin films
Methanol (CH3OH) is a colorless liquid with a mild odor. The wide ranges of applications, toxicity and clinical implications of methanol have made necessary to develop reliable and high-performance methanol sensors. In this paper, WO3 thin films were deposited on SiO2/Si substrates by e-beam evaporation technique under normal and oblique angles and then post-annealed at 500 °C with a flow of ox...
متن کاملEnergetics of adsorbed methanol and methoxy on Pt(111) by microcalorimetry.
The heat of adsorption and sticking probability of methanol were measured on clean Pt(111) at 100, 150, and 210 K and on oxygen-precovered Pt(111) at 150 K by single-crystal adsorption calorimetry (SCAC). On clean Pt(111) at 100 K, the heat of methanol adsorption was found to be 60.5 ± 0.8 kJ/mol in the limit of low coverage, resulting in a standard enthalpy of formation (ΔH(f)°) of CH(3)OH(ad)...
متن کاملReactivity of Ultra-Thin ZnO Films Supported by Ag(111) and Cu(111): A Comparison to ZnO/Pt(111)
We studied structure and reactivity of ZnO(0001) ultrathin films grown on Ag(111) and Cu(111) single crystal surfaces. Structural characterization was carried out by scanning tunneling microscopy, Auger electron spectroscopy, low-energy electron diffraction, and temperature programmed desorption. The CO oxidation behavior of the films was studied at low temperature (450 K) at near atmospheric p...
متن کاملCO adsorption and kinetics on well-characterized Pd films on Pt(111) in alkaline solutions
The electrochemistry of CO on a bare Pt(111) electrode as well as a Pt(111) electrode modified with pseudomorphic thin palladium films has been studied in alkaline solution by means of Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. First Pd films were prepared and well characterized in UHV and subsequently transferred into the electrochemical cell for the registration of the voltammetric profi...
